20 March 8 am. Anchored off Ylo39 in 19 fathoms. Anchor Bearings, West Rock off Ylo N16˚30’E. Railway Chimney S62˚30’E

Ylo found here the Blanco Encalada (Admiral Riveros182) Huascar183, Angamos, Abtao, Pilcomayo184 (the latter was captured by the Blanco off Mollendo sometime before and was taken to Valparaiso repaired and mounted with 6 guns, 2 of which were the long range Armstrong guns of 70 pounders). We saluted the Admiral with 13 guns.

Found the place almost denuded of troops, 4,000 only remaining, the others having been marched to Moquegua en route for Tacna and Arica and captured the place without resistance. Heard of the very serious illness of General Escala; Sotomayor185, the War Minister, was at the front and apparently seemed to working the war himself. 11 am weighed and proceeded north.
